Who can do a flexi-job?

You qualify if you work at least 4/5th during the quarter for one or more employers. If you're retired, you can flexi-job without limits. Students with a student job fall under a different status and therefore cannot do a flexi-job. If you work less than 4/5th, you'll have to wait until you meet that condition. Yes, the threshold is working at least 4/5. If you work 4.5 days out of 5, i.e. 0.9 FTE, you meet the condition. It concerns your employment with one or more other employers in the third quarter before your flexi-job starts. All periods paid by the employer count, as do a number of absences set out in the rules. If in doubt, ask your employer or social secretariat.

What changed for flexi-jobs in 2026?

The main changes: the tax ceiling is 18,440 euros for income year 2026, and since 1 July 2026 a flexi-job is possible in almost all sectors. For the flexi-worker the principle remains simple: no tax on your flexi-wage up to that ceiling.

What if you earn more than 18,440 euros with a flexi-job?

Then only what you earn above 18,440 euros (income year 2026) is taxed. That ceiling does not apply to retirees. So it's advisable to monitor your income closely.

Who cannot do a flexi-job?

Anyone who did not work 4/5th in the third quarter before the start and is not retired is not eligible. A student or job seeker without that 4/5th therefore does not meet the condition. You also may not do a flexi-job with an employer where you already have another employment relationship.

What are the disadvantages of a flexi-job?

A flexi-job contract applies for a fixed period or a clearly defined task, so your income can vary. Above 18,440 euros (income year 2026), anything extra you earn is taxed, unless you are retired. You do build up social rights, and you receive flexi holiday pay of 7.67% together with your wage. You are entitled to bonuses if you meet the conditions. So weigh up what it brings you.
