What makes a flexi-job so interesting?

Imagine: you have a permanent job of 32 or 38 hours, but you'd like to earn a little extra without the taxman taking half. Then a flexi-job is a smart move. Your gross wage is immediately your net wage, and you don't build up additional social rights that could affect your benefits or pension. That makes the threshold low, both for you and your employer.

It's not just a student job for adults, it's a well-thought-out system that gives sectors with many peak moments, such as hospitality and retail, extra breathing room. And for you, it means a flexible extra income that you can easily fit around your fixed hours.

Who is eligible?

Not everyone can simply take a flexi-job. You must meet one of these conditions:

• You work at least 4/5 (80%) for another employer. This can be in any sector, but your main job may not be in hospitality or retail if you also want to work flexi there, a small but important nuance.
• You are retired. As a pensioner, you can work flexi without limit, without your pension being at risk. An ideal way to stay active and earn a little extra.

How much can you earn with a flexi-job?

The big advantage: your wage is fully net. But there is a limit attached. In 2025, the maximum wage is €12 per hour. If you work in hospitality, a small supplement may be added through the joint committee. On average, you earn between €11 and €13 per hour, depending on the sector and your age.

There is no absolute limit on the number of hours, as long as you avoid part-time work (less than 4/5). Most flexi-jobbers work about 10 to 20 hours per month extra. That keeps it manageable and beneficial.

How to apply smartly for a flexi-job

Finding a flexi-job is step one, but how do you make sure you get it? Three tips:

• Be quick. Popular flexi-jobs are often filled within the day. Turn on your notifications or check the list in the morning.
• Write a short, friendly email in which you immediately state that you meet the flexi conditions and when you can start. Keep it light, but show your enthusiasm.
• Show your flexibility. Employers are looking for someone who can step in at short notice. Therefore, mention your available hours and that you don't need a complicated contract, that speaks volumes.

And remember: a flexi-job is not a job application for life. It's about mutual convenience. So stay yourself and enjoy the extra pocket money.
