Flexi-job Rules 2025: How It Really Works

A flexi-job is the way to earn extra money in Flanders without heavy taxes. You work extra hours in your free time, with a tailored contract. But there are rules you need to know. We summarize them for you here.

The basics: who can do a flexi-job?

You can do a flexi-job if you work at least 4/5ths for another employer. So a permanent job of about 32 hours per week is enough. Pensioners are also welcome, without that work requirement. Are you a student or jobseeker? Then flexi-jobs are unfortunately not for you.

An important rule: you cannot do a flexi-job for an employer where you worked under another contract in the past quarter. This is the 'waiting period'. For pensioners, this waiting period does not apply if they have retired.

In which sectors is it possible?

Since 1 January 2024, flexi-jobs are no longer limited to hospitality and retail. Now it is allowed in almost all private sectors: from healthcare to logistics. Only the public sector and construction remain excluded.

How much do you earn? And what about taxes?

Your gross pay is at least the sectoral minimum wage. As an employee, you pay only 10% personal social security contribution on that. The rest is net for you. On top of your pay, you receive flexi holiday pay (7.67%) monthly. The big advantage: up to an annual limit of €12,000 (in 2025) you pay no taxes on your flexi income. Once you exceed that, it is taxed as ordinary income. The government keeps track; your employer informs you when you approach the limit.

Note: what changes in 2026?

From 1 January 2026, the tax benefit will be phased out. You will then keep slightly less net per hour worked. Flexi-jobs remain interesting, but it pays to make the most of this year.

And what are the drawbacks?

• You do not build up extra pension rights with your flexi-job.
• The annual limit of €12,000 can sometimes be reached quickly, especially if you work a lot.
• You have no separate status through the flexi-job in case of illness; you fall back on your main job.
