Flexi-job in healthcare: what's allowed in 2026

Since 1 July 2026, flexi-jobs have been allowed in almost all sectors, private and public. Two points need attention in healthcare:

• Limits per sector: the sectors with JC 330, 331 and 332 can use an opt-out to limit flexi-jobs to a maximum percentage of an employer's total volume of work.
• Diplomas: you need the diplomas and qualifications required for the job; the rules on access to protected professions still apply.

First check whether you meet the general condition. To do a flexi-job, you must in principle have worked at least 4/5 for one or more other employers in the third quarter before the flexi-job, or be retired. If you are a student or jobseeker without that 4/5, you do not meet the condition.

What do you earn with a flexi-job in healthcare?

Outside hospitality, your flexi-wage must be at least the minimum wage that applies in the sector for your job; hospitality has a separate minimum. On your flexi-wage you pay no employee contributions, and no tax up to 18,440 euros (income year 2026); anything above that is taxed. That ceiling does not apply to retirees. Who is this for?

• Nurses and care assistants who meet the 4/5 condition and want to work extra shifts with an employer other than their main employer.
• Retired care professionals who want to keep using their experience. The tax ceiling does not apply to them.
• People with a main job outside healthcare who meet the 4/5 condition and want to earn extra in a care environment, for example in the kitchen or in logistics.

Note: in principle, you cannot combine a regular job and a flexi-job with the same employer. So if you work at residential care centre X, you do a flexi-job with another employer. Fill in the application form straight away.
