Flexi-job in healthcare: what's allowed in 2026

The flexi-job system in healthcare grew in three steps:

• Since 2023: support roles in healthcare were already allowed: think logistics assistant, kitchen help, maintenance, administration and transport. Caregiving tasks remained off-limits.
• Since April 2026: nurses and care assistants can also take on flexi-shifts alongside their main job. For caregiving roles, a recognised diploma remains mandatory: you step in for the role you were trained for.
• From 1 July 2026: flexi-jobs are possible in all sectors and services of local authorities, including municipal residential care centres and OCMW care services.

For residential care centres and hospitals, this means flexible staffing during peak times; for care professionals, it means earning net extra income at times they choose. First check whether you meet the general flexi-job conditions.

What do you earn with a flexi-job in healthcare?

Your flexi pay follows the sectoral pay scale of the role you take on, and as a flexi-jobber you pay no taxes or personal social security contributions on that pay: gross is net. Up to an annual ceiling of €18,440 (2026 amount), your flexi income remains untaxed; pensioners have no ceiling. Flexi holiday pay is already included in your hourly wage. Who is this interesting for?

• Nurses and care assistants who want to work extra shifts alongside their 4/5 job with another employer, paid net.
• Retired care professionals who want to keep using their experience without tax penalties.
• People with a main job outside healthcare who want to earn extra in a care environment through a support role (kitchen, logistics, reception): that has been possible since 2023 and remains possible.
