What is a flexi-job?

A flexi-job is a side job for those who have in principle worked at least 4/5 for one or more other employers in the third quarter before the flexi-job, or who are retired. On your flexi-wage you pay no employee contributions, and no tax up to 18,440 euros (income year 2026); anything above that is taxed. That ceiling does not apply to retirees. Since 1 July 2026, a flexi-job is possible in almost all sectors; whether it is possible for a given job depends on the rules of the sector.

A flexi-job is a smart system to earn something extra alongside your main activity. No complicated paperwork, because the employer arranges the Dimona declaration. Who can do a flexi-job?

Not everyone can just start a flexi-job. You are eligible if:

You work at least 4/5 for one or more employers. That means at least 80% of a full-time schedule.
You are retired, but then you may not have worked for that employer in the last three quarters before your retirement.

What are the conditions in 2026?

The rules change a little every year. From 2026, these important figures apply:

You may earn a maximum of 12,000 euros gross per year with flexi-jobs. That is the amount before deduction of the employer contribution, but for you it remains net.
The legal maximum hourly wage is 17.03 euros (2025 amount, indexation follows).
The employer pays a special social security contribution of 28% on your wage, keeping the system affordable for them.

A flexi-job sounds almost too good to be true, but of course it also belongs to reality.

Advantages:

Your net wage is free of taxes and social contributions.
You do not build up additional social rights, so it has no influence on your pension or benefit.
Flexible hours: often you work part-time or on weekends.
You get to know new people and skills close to home.

Disadvantages:

No accrual of vacation days or end-of-year bonus.
No protection against dismissal, because it is a special employment contract.
You may not exceed the maximum amount, otherwise you lose the benefit.

For your annual income, the tax ceiling counts: up to 18,440 euros (income year 2026) you pay no tax on your flexi-wage; anything above that is taxed. That ceiling does not apply to retirees. If you are retired and have reached neither the legal retirement age nor 45 years of career, from 2026 you can earn at most 8,121 euros a year with a flexi-job.
In which sectors is a flexi-job possible?
Since 1 July 2026, a flexi-job is possible in almost all sectors; whether it is possible for a given job depends on the rules of the sector. In a few sectors flexi-jobs are not allowed, such as agriculture and horticulture (except the laying out and maintenance of parks and gardens). In 2026 sectors can ask every quarter, and from 2027 every year, not to allow flexi-jobs.
How do I combine a flexi-job with my pension?
If you have reached the legal retirement age or have 45 years of career, your professional income is not limited. If you are retired and have reached neither the legal retirement age nor 45 years of career, from 2026 you can earn at most 8,121 euros a year with a flexi-job. The tax ceiling of 18,440 euros does not apply to retirees. Contact the Federal Pension Service beforehand to make sure your flexi-job does not affect your pension.

Does my employer have to give permission for a flexi-job?

In principle, you do a flexi-job with an employer other than your main employer. Check your own employment contract to see what your main employer requires regarding a side job; if in doubt, ask your main employer.

Does a flexi-job count as a service voucher?

No, a flexi-job is separate from service vouchers. With service vouchers you pay as a private individual, with a flexi-job you are employed by an employer who pays your wages.
